COMMITTEE ON NATIONAL ECONOMY VISITS BUKEDEA TO ACCESS MULTI MILLION PROJECTS AND COMMUNITY IMPACT

The parliamentary committee on National Economy economy made a significant field visit to Bukedea district on Thursday 26 2025 aimed to access the progress and impact of government and donor funded projects . The committee visit was part of the ongoing oversight mission to ensure accountability and effective use of public resources across the country.

The delegation was led by Hon. Ikojo John Bosco, the chairperson of the committee and also member of parliament for Bukedea County toured infrastructure, agriculture and irrigation scheme.

One of the key stops was a visit to the soya demonstration garden in Bukedea Town Council. This was established under the 25million National Oil Seed project under the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal,Industries and Fisheries.

This has led to the establishment of 10 demonstration gardens and 2 local seed business groups comprising of 17-60 farmers spread up in the sub counties of Malera, Kabarwa,Kolir,Kamutur,and Bukedea Town Council with 14 acres of soya bean, 5acres of Simsim , 7 acres of groundnut , 3 acres of sunflower.

The committee expressed alot of optimism to the development and expansion of the project to improve the livelihood of the farmers

The National Oil Seed project also led to the rehabilitation of the Koreng-Kangole-Kaleu 12.56km community access road using the 1.1 billion obtained from external financing.

" We are pleased to see visible progress, but we have also noted delays that must be addressed to meet the set timelines " said Hon. Ikojo.

He also continued to emphasize that the road was established to aid easy transportation of produce especially oil seeds to different areas of production.

The other key stop was the 6000 acres of water and irrigation scheme worth 71.8billion a flagship project meant to enhance food security in the region . The committee expressed optimism about the progress as it was so far at 97% but emphasised the need for timely implementation and proper maintenance.

"Projects like this have the potential to to transform livelihood" said Hon. Isodo Stella , a member of the committee.

She also continued to emphasize the need to use the obtained funds effectively and that the benefits reach the intended communities .

The oversight visit was also marked by consultative meeting in Kangole Subcounty headquarters where the people expressed their gratitude to to the government for setting up such projects and looking out for the people of Bukedea.

"I want to that the members of this Committee for having the development of Bukedea at heart and coming to the grassroots to monitor on the progress of the projects established" said Hon Mary Akol, the District LC 5 Chairperson.

She also used this opportunity to lobby for the rehabilitation of more roads in Bukedea district.
